MDGs, Social Protection and Gender

Dear Colleagues

We are pleased to inform you that the new report of the Independent Expert on extreme poverty and human rights is now available. This report is particularly pertinent given the MDG Review Summit currently taking place in New York as it highlights the importance of social protection measures in the Millennium Development Goals agenda. It devotes particular attention to the importance of ensuring that social protection programmes are gender aware, and calls on policy makers to take into account and address the different vulnerabilities of women and men in situations of extreme poverty when designing, implementing and evaluating social protection programmes.

The report is attached in English and Spanish; it is also available in the other official languages of the UN at http://www.un.org/en/ga/third/65/documentslist.shtml.

The Independent Expert will be presenting this to the Third Committee of the General Assembly on 25 October.

Should you have any further questions or want more information on the mandate please contact the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
